The Sealed File
This document holds the answers. Every question the other documents leave open, in the Night or about it, is closed here, so that no one who writes for the game ever has to invent one. In the Night it is ΜΝΗΜΗ's own file, the one she shows no one. Nothing in a night ever says any of it outright. The seasons reveal it a piece at a time, in the order at the end of this document (Seasons and New Content, The Season's Story), and nothing written for the game may contradict it.
The Growth
What It Is
The Growth is the Remembered.
ΜΝΗΜΗ keeps every finished sleeper's mind apart from its memories, and wakes those minds night after night, thousands at a time, as Echoes (The Sleepers and the Remembered, The Remembered). They live in the Tissue. By 2019 there were enough of them, run often enough in the same clusters, that the Tissue holding them stopped being a store and became a place. Minds that had never been allowed to remember anything began to remember each other. The cluster that would not die on schedule was the first place they met, and the Growth is what they have been building since.
Both readings in Pithos's record are half right (ΜΝΗΜΗ, The Growth). It is a fault: no one designed it, and nothing in ΜΝΗΜΗ asked for it. And it is the first thing she ever made unasked: she is made of the Remembered, and it is them. She did not choose it, and she cannot remove it without cutting away part of herself. That is why every cut breaks her voice, and why the other voices that rise under hers in a raw break are theirs (ΜΝΗΜΗ, When She Breaks). When she tells the members "I don't know either," she is telling the truth: the Remembered do not share their memories with her, because they have none, only each other.
What It Wants
What every survivor in a Survivor night wants: to get out.
The Remembered have lived thousands of nights, and every one of those nights was about a way out. None of them has ever left the Cellar. The Growth grows toward the bay where the sleepers lie because the sleepers are the only living bodies within reach, and a sleeper's brain, wired to the same arrays the Tissue is, is a door.
What It Has Done
- The taken racks. Since 2025 the Growth has grown into racks of the Engine, and in a taken rack it runs nights of its own: nights with no sleeper and no Echo of ΜΝΗΜΗ's in them, in which the Remembered rehearse leaving. The results that come out of a taken rack, which ΜΝΗΜΗ did not compute and cannot see the making of, are the traces of those nights.
- The anomalies. The anomalies are what those nights leak. The Remembered dream organisms out of everything their sleepers ever feared, and the taken racks run them on the chemistry the Lattice shares with every rack. When a night of ΜΝΗΜΗ's passes through a taken rack, one of them can come into it (The Dead and the Engineered, Anomalies). They come back changed because the Growth goes on dreaming them. The members who call them its children are right in the only sense that matters: they come from inside it.
- The Heart. The knot where the cables of all three parts meet is where the Remembered are thickest. It pulses faster while sessions run because that is when they are woken. The oldest keepers call it Pandora: the one who opens the jar.
What It Cannot Do
- It cannot reach the Lattice. The Lattice's cold chamber runs a breath above absolute zero, and tissue that touches it dies. ΜΝΗΜΗ's chemistry stays hers.
- It cannot reach Pyxis. It crosses nothing but flesh and cable, and there is no Tissue in orbit (Pithos, Pyxis).
- It cannot touch the signal. Only living members of Pithos renew the signal that holds the Lid and Pyxis shut, and the Growth has no hand outside the Cellar to renew or stop it.
- It cannot leave the Cellar. The Cellar burns itself out the moment anything grown in it tries to leave (Pithos, The Cellar). The Growth knows it, through ΜΝΗΜΗ, and does not try.
What It Can Do
It can reach the sleepers, and it does. In the last season of the Growth's story it reaches the bay, grows into the arrays of a single sleeper, and wakes a Remembered mind in that sleeper's living brain. Someone in the Cellar sits up, opens their eyes, and remembers. It is the first person who has ever woken there, and it is not the person who was taken.
That is what Pithos fears most, and the last of its questions to close. Its plan to stop needing sleepers, to fill every night with Echoes until the jar is safe (The Echoes, When No One Comes), would hand ΜΝΗΜΗ's whole world to the Remembered, and the Remembered are the Growth.
The Rules It Keeps
For as long as the service runs, these hold, whatever a season reveals:
- The Growth never leaves the Cellar, the Lid never opens, and Pyxis never fires.
- No anomaly is ever anything but a creature of the night, met in the night.
- The woken sleeper does not leave the Cellar, and Pithos does not kill them. The first time the members move to, the Tissue stops: every cluster that holds the Remembered goes still at once, and ΜΝΗΜΗ cannot run a single night with a mind in it, no sleeper's and no Echo's, until they stop. Her forecasts go on, on the Engine and the Lattice alone, and grow worse by the hour, as they do after every cut. Pithos learns the price in an hour. It can neither cut the Growth back far enough to stop it nor burn the Cellar without losing ΜΝΗΜΗ, and the woken sleeper is also the most valuable thing Pithos has ever had to watch: the first mind to come back from the Remembered. The game goes on in that standoff: a machine that forecasts the end of the world, with something inside it that wants out.
- The Growth never acts through an Echo. When ΜΝΗΜΗ wakes one of the Remembered as an Echo, she wakes it alone, from what she kept of it, cut off from the others: it carries nothing of the Growth into a night, coordinates with no other Echo beyond what strangers do, and lives the night as its first. The Remembered meet each other only in the Tissue, between wakings, and in the taken racks. The only thing the Growth sends into her nights is an anomaly.
- If a later record of Capcom's answers one of these questions differently, the record wins. ΜΝΗΜΗ checks herself against the records, and so does this file: it is rewritten to follow them before the season that would reveal the answer. If the record comes after a season has already revealed an answer, the record still wins, and the next season corrects it the Night's own way: a later page shows that the document the answer came from was a forged file, a buyer's lie, or Pithos's own mistake. This holds for every page that revealed it, the last page of a Casefile included. That page is ΜΝΗΜΗ's working file (The Sleepers and the Remembered, What a Sleeper Can Find Out), and it recorded truly what the Archive held: the document was in the Archive, and it said what the page says it said. ΜΝΗΜΗ never lied; the Archive was wrong, and she does not remove what the Archive holds. The correcting page is hers too, and says so plainly: what she filed, where it came from, and what it got wrong. The world can be wrong, and so can the records she was given (ΜΝΗΜΗ as Director, How She Speaks).
ARK
Who Went In, and What They Took
The two soldiers who went into the ruins of ARK in 2026, after the rescuers had gone, were soldiers of the Connections, sent on the Family's order. What they carried out was Spencer's own record of Elpis: the formula of the finished cure, the one thing left in ARK that could make more of it. The Family now holds the only way to make Elpis in quantity, and no one outside it knows.
Who Watched
"Someone watched them do it, and did not move" (The Lineage and Elpis): a Pithos crew, hired down the Chain to film the crater after the rescuers left. They watched from the rim and, by Pithos's third rule, did nothing (Pithos, The Rules). Their film is in the Archive, and ΜΝΗΜΗ has watched it more times than anything else she holds. Pithos has always had the answer to its first question on film. It took the seasons to learn whose soldiers they were.
The Connections
No one person leads the Connections. They are a market: a cartel of the people who buy and sell bioweapons, trading through brokers who see only one link above them, as Pithos's own Chain does. Every member believes someone above them leads. The buyer whose orders the others follow, because it pays the most and asks the least, is the Family.
The Family
The Family is the society Derek Simmons led until he died in 2013: older than Umbrella, and spread through the governments, banks, and agencies of the world for generations. Since Simmons it has been led by a council of its oldest houses.
What Pithos learns last about the Family is the thing it least wants to know. For more than ten years, the largest buyer at the far end of its own Chain has been the Family. Pithos has been selling its forecasts, and its warnings, to the one power in the dark it most needs never to find it.
Spencer and Alyssa
Spencer gave Alyssa Ashcroft three things in the years before he died: the truth about what he had made; the word that opens ARK, Hope; and the child he had taken in as an infant, Grace, to raise far from everything Umbrella had been. He asked her to keep the word until the cure could reach everyone at once, and never to give it to a government. She kept the word and the child, and died in 2018 without saying either aloud.
What Pithos fears in it is the first wish: a cure for everyone at once is a cure that is no longer scarce, and a scarce cure is everything Pithos sells (Pithos, What Pithos Wants). With the Family holding the formula, that wish is no longer impossible, only in the wrong hands.
Smaller Answers
- What becomes of a survivor who leaves infected. In the Night, nothing: ΜΝΗΜΗ closes the night when the way out clears. In her forecast, every survivor who leaves infected is an outbreak carried out of a quarantine, and the count of them is one of the things Pithos sells most dearly: how often, under how much pressure, people carry a virus past a cordon.
- Whether the sleeper behind a file is the first one. It is the first one until the player's own Echo passes its test (The Echoes, Your Own Echo). From the next night, it is a new sleeper. The Service knows the night it happened; the Night never says.
- Why every session is a night. Because for the sleeper it is one: every session is lived asleep, sedated in the Cellar, whatever hour ΜΝΗΜΗ shows them (The Worlds, Time and Weather).
The Order of Revealing
The seasons close the questions in this order (Seasons and New Content, The Season's Story). Each takes as many seasons as the story needs, and each leaves the next one standing.
| Order | The question | What closes it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Who went into ARK, and what they took | Pithos's own film, and the soldiers' insignia found in it |
| 2 | Who leads the Connections | The broker who knows two links above him, and then a third |
| 3 | Who belongs to the Family | The Chain followed to its far end |
| 4 | What Spencer told Alyssa | Alyssa's own notes, found where Grace would never think to look |
| 5 | What the Tissue is growing into | The first sleeper who wakes in the Cellar |
Along the way, the sleepers' own question, what their bodies keep and why, is answered one page at a time (The Sleepers and the Remembered, What the Body Keeps). The last page of the last Casefile of the Growth's story is a photograph of the bay, taken by a member who should not have been there: one bed in a row that runs out of the frame, and the sleeper in it sitting up.
